In our first installment of What is Senseon, we discussed what the reader is and how it functions within the Senseon system. In this article, we’re going to go over the hub and how it functions as the reception desk of the Senseon system.

Lucas Nielsen, one of Senseon’s research and development engineers, took the time to sit with us and talk with us about the hub and how it functions.

Q:  What is the hub?

Nielsen: The hub is the electrical interconnection point that feeds power from the power supply to the reader and the electronic locks. In the same way visitors go to a receptionist for information, Senseon’s hub takes the signal from the reader and transmits it through the rest of the system.

Q: How does the hub function in the system?

Nielsen:  When the reader receives a signal from a valid card, the hub(s) will distribute the trigger signal from the reader to the electronic locks.

The signal goes through the first hub, to the electronic lock, then to the rest of the system if there is more than one opening. This all happens within milliseconds of tapping the RFID card, fob, wristband, or tag.

Q:  How is the hub mounted in the cabinet?

Nielsen:  We recommend mounting the hub “center-and-center”; meaning, centered horizontally and vertically between the lock within the cabinet. This typically means at the rear of the cabinet as depicted in the design guide. Keeping with Senseon’s low-profile design, the hub requires just a ½” of clearance mounting in the cabinet.

Q:  What benefit does the hub serve for cabinetmakers and furniture designers?

Nielsen:  Using one hub for each locked opening, the hub simplifies the installation process. With just two screws or a strip of adhesive, installers can mount it and then snap in all the connectors and wiring from the locks and other hubs. This really makes Senseon a plug-and-play system.

For designers, the best thing about the hub is that it keeps everything looking clean by helping to manage the wires within the cabinet. This helps ensure you don’t have a jumbled nest of cables in the back of the cabinet. Especially in retail environments where a computer or other technology may have cables running through the cabinet.
